As all of us on the East Coast brace for a major hurricane this weekend, I figure what better way to spend those hours cooped up away from the storm than grooving to some more awesome covers by Death Cab for Cutie. These covers aren’t entirely new, but as far as I know this is the only place on the web where you can download them for yourself.

So what’s better than hearing DCFC cover The Shins, Rilo Kiley and Michael Jackson? Being able to download those tracks for free! Just click away on the links below to download. Enjoy everybody!

"Plans" didn't make it to Scotland until 2010

Awesome cover alert! Frightened Rabbit have been opening for Death Cab for most of their summer tour, but who knew they were such big fans until now. Right now courtesy of Consequence of Sound you can listen to Frightened Rabbit frontman, Scott Hutchinson, perform an acoustic cover of underrated Plans gem, “Different Names For The Same Thing”.

The cover is beautifully performed, as Hutchinson strips the lush instrumentation down to a folky shell of it’s original self. He said of the song, “I almost tried to ‘countrify’ the song, as it has such a strong beautiful melody. It’s a very simple song at its core, so I just stuck with that basic structure and let it be plaintive and sad.”

Update: I made the track available for download. Check it out below.

Suddenly, everything has changed

In a recent interview with Tulsa World, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne let spill that in the near future he and his band plan to collaborate with Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard. No word yet on exactly what form this collaboration will take, but with the Lips scheduled to put out an album by the end of the year, it’s possible Ben might be lending his talents to the next Flaming Lips LP. In the interview, Wayne said:

“I ran into Ben (Gibbard) at a festival last night and we just started talking. That’s how it happens … We play so many shows with interesting people. This is how I get to know them. Like when Ke$ha was in Tulsa a couple of weeks ago. I want to do something with her. It doesn’t have to be great. It’s just something interesting to do, something we can listen to later.”

I don’t think i’ll be alone in saying that i’m a little bit more interested in the prospect of a Flaming Lips-Ben Gibbard collaboration than a Flaming Lips-Ke$ha collaboration. Coyne also stated that he plans to work with Black Moth Super Rainbow.

Ben is not shy about his longtime love for the Flaming Lips — the Postal Service covered The Soft Bulletin standout, “Suddenly Everything Has Changed” for their 2003 EP. You can download the cover below.

I know, I know…this cover of the semi-obscure early 90’s Britpop group Ride‘s “Twisterella” has been showing up on setlists for a while now. But a couple weeks ago when DCFC stopped by BBC Radio One, they gave us by far the best quality recording of the cover to date. The song fits startling well with Death Cab’s style and Ben’s voice, so much so that you could probably fool your friends into thinking you uncovered some sort of B-side from The Photo Album.

Check out the stream below, and if you like what you here (and I know you will) I’ve made the song available for download. Enjoy, and rock on like it’s 1992.
